Photographic portrait of Joel G. Hardman. Joel G. Hardman received his M.S. in Pharmacy Studies from the University of Georgia in 1959 and his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Emory University in 1964. He served as Instructor of Physiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine from 1964-1967, Assistant Professor of Physiology from 1967-1970, Associate Professor of Physiology from 1970-1972, and was promoted to full Professor in 1972. Hardman was appointed Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt in 1975 and served in that capacity until 1990. Named Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs in 1990, Hardman worked to develop and sustain biomedical research. He retired in 1997.
