Photographic portrait of Stanley Cohen. Dr. Stanley Cohen was born in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Brooklyn College (B.A. 1943), Oberlin College (M.A. 1945), and the University of Michigan (Ph.D. 1948). Dr. Cohen joined the faculty of the Vanderbilt University biochemistry department in 1959 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1986 for discoveries of the mechanisms regulating cell growth. He shared the prize with Rita Levi-Montalcini of Italy. Dr. Cohen became Emeritus Professor at Vanderbilt in 1997.
