Dr. Paul DeWitt completed his undergraduate work and medical training at Vanderbilt University. He was a Founder's Medalist in the School of Medicine in 1905. A prominent Nashville physician and surgeon, DeWitt worked at the State Training and Agricultural School. He also served as a general surgeon at Nashville General Hospital (1910-1911), Chairman of the Executive Committee at Protestant Hospital (1922-1923), and taught anatomy for a short time at Vanderbilt. DeWitt was elected chairman of the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross several times and named an honorary chairman for life. Title A name given to the resource Robert Sydney Cunningham Subject The topic of the resource VUMC History, Anatomy Description An account of the resource Photographic portrait of Robert Sydney Cunningham. Robert Sydney Cunningham was born and raised in Anderson, SC. He graduated from Davidson College with B.S. and M.A. degrees in 1911, at the age of twenty. He continued his studies in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins, receiving the M.D. degree in 1915. After graduation R.S. Cunningham became an instructor in the Anatomy Department at Johns Hopkins. He remained at Johns Hopkins for the next ten years. In 1925 he became head of the Department of Anatomy (1925-1937) at the newly reorganized Vanderbilt University Medical School. He left Vanderbilt in 1937 to become Dean of the Albany Medical School. Dr. Cunningham ended his career as visiting Professor of Histology at the University of Virginia in Richmond. A close friend, Edna H. Tompkins, wrote this about Dr. Cunningham at the time of his death: "Dr. Cunningham was a brilliant but shy man, who shunned the limelight and had no interests outside of his home, his garden and his intellectual pursuits." Glenn E. Cullen who became the first chairman of the Department of Biochemistry in the newly reorganized Vanderbilt Medical School, was born April 1, 1890, Isle St. George, Ontario, Canada. He received both his A.B. (Chemistry, 1912) and B. Chem. Eng. (1913) from the University of Michigan. He graduated with a Ph.D. from Columbia University (1917). A native of Canada, Cullen was a research chemist at The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research From 1913-1922. In association with D. D. Van Slyke, he developed widely used methodologies in clinical chemistry. From 1922-1924, Cullen was Associate Professor of Research, University of Pennsylvania Medical School. In 1924 he was chosen by G. Canby Robinson to become the first Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry in the newly organized Vanderbilt Medical School and was awarded a travelling fellowship in Europe prior to the opening of the new medical facilities in 1926.
